Keywords: hiking, Gothenburg islands, spontaneous kindness, Scandinavian coast
Today I set out for a solo hike across Brännö, one of the many islands in the Gothenburg archipelago, expecting a quiet day by the sea. What I didn’t expect was a sudden storm — or a spontaneous invitation into a stranger’s home that turned into an unforgettable conversation.
Getting There
From Järntorget, I took tram line 11 to Grefab Saltholmen Yttre, then hopped on the 283 ferry. All of this is covered by the Västtrafik A-zone — super convenient and affordable for a day trip from Gothenburg.
Upon arrival, I walked past rows of charming hillside homes, each with gardens bursting with early-summer color. I couldn’t help but feel a pang of envy — imagine living in one of these peaceful villas, with the sea breeze and a garden of your own.
The Storm, the House, and the Cat
As I reached the start of the hiking trail, heavy rain suddenly poured down. Just as I was thinking about turning back, a woman — a stranger — waved me over and invited me into her summer house to wait out the storm.
We talked for a long time. She told me the house had belonged to her father, and now she uses it as a summer retreat. It had electricity, running water, and garbage collection — quite a rare level of comfort for such a remote location. She even joked that if she could work from home full-time, she’d move here in a heartbeat.
Her little daughter was playing nearby, and they had a huge cat wandering lazily around the house. The whole scene felt like a still life painting: rain pattering outside, quiet laughter, and the cozy hum of an island home.
After the Rain: To Galterö huvud
Once the rain let up, I continued my hike — now alone again, but strangely content. The trail took me all the way to Galterö huvud, where I climbed onto a high rock plateau and looked out over the sea.

The view was incredible: bare coastal rocks, sea winds, and that wild, Northern sky. There's something about the Nordic landscape that feels raw and eternal — it’s not just scenery, it’s mood.
Final Thoughts
I went out for a hike, but what I found was more than just a trail. I found a story — of weather, kindness, and unexpected company. Brännö and Galterö might not be the most famous destinations, but today, they gave me something quietly unforgettable.
